Doing Good In All We Do

Doing Good In All We Do

Something that never fails to amaze me is just how massive, diverse, and beautiful all of God’s creation is! Everything – every animal, unique person, landscape, and distant star – God created them all! I find the Creation story to be so fascinating. It’s arguably one of the most popular stories in the Bible as it’s the first. However, I still enjoy going back and rereading it from time to time. Each time I reread the first chapter of Genesis I feel like I gleam something new about God’s character.

One of the aspects of God’s character I’ve been marveling over is the way He creates. I think we can learn a lot from studying God’s creative process. We know that God is omnipotent. He has unending power and is able to do all things. Therefore, He could’ve easily spoken the entire universe into existence all at once. At His command, everything as we know it would’ve formed in the blink of an eye. Yet, that’s not what he does.

Instead, we know that God created the heavens and the earth over a period of six days, resting on the seventh day. Each day of work He focused His attention on crafting a specific part of our world. Instead of rushing, He takes His time, handcrafting each thing with love, paying attention to every minute detail, crafting away until He finally deems it as “good”.

While I have no doubt that God’s concept of time is much different than our own, I think it speaks volumes of His character that He didn’t rush through any of it, even though He very well could have! What this shows me is that we should strive to do our very best in everything, too, just like our Heavenly Father!

We are instructed to do all things for the Lord.

Let’s face it: sometimes it’s tempting to do things half-heartedly. We live such busy lives. We’re stressed out with responsibilities. We’re tired. Often we can find ourselves moaning and groaning as we rush to check everything off of our daily to-do lists. But the Bible tells us “…whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31 KJV; emphasis added).

Not just the big things, not just the important things, or the things that other people will see. We are instructed to do all things for the Lord.

That means the little things, too. Things like doing the dishes, cooking dinner for your family, getting your kids ready for school in the mornings. Even the seemingly meaningless tasks you may be doing at work. You may think they don’t matter, that you get paid either way. But God sees it all, and He sees you. Are you doing everything for His glory?

Let’s strive to be more like our Heavenly Father – always aiming to be doing good in all we do. Let every task we do – no matter how big or small it may seem – be done with love and with our whole hearts for His glory.

Journal Prompt

In what areas of your life are you showing up half-heartedly? Ask God how He can shift your perspective and help you to find joy in these tasks.

Prayer

Lord, I am so amazed by your Creation! Thank You for taking Your time and pouring Your love into everything You create – including me! Your handiwork is evident all around me in everything and everyone I see! Please forgive me for complaining about my to-do list. I know I take so much for granted. Change my perspective from one of “I have to…” to one of “I get to…” and help me to do my best in all I do for Your glory.

Bible Verses

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” Colossians 3:23-24 ESV

“I perceived that there is nothing better for them than to be joyful and to do good as long as they live; also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil—this is God’s gift to man.” Ecclesiastes 3:12-13 ESV

“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” 1 Corinthians 15:58 ESV
